Red Dust? Posted on November 08, 2022. Parc Tredellerch, Cardiff, UK. I'd been photographing songbirds for a couple of hours since first light on a morning back in mid March. It was about time to pack up and go home because the shadows were starting to become too harsh for my taste. This frame of a Great T!t was one of the last of my morning session and while I don't care much for the shadows, something happened with the way the light was illuminating the background that turned it into an image I quite like. The reddish light only lasted for about a minute according to the images I captured and I was at a loss to explain it - until I edited the photo yesterday and did a bit of research. I found out from old news reports that there was Saharan dust in the atmosphere over the UK at the time the image was made. I didn't notice anything with my naked eye at the time, but I guess it could explain a sudden but quite short change in light colour that was picked up by my camera. Anyway, I can't think of any other explanation for such a shift in light colour - that background is quite green in other images I took during the morning and my camera settings didn't change much - aperture and shutter speed only. The colour change didn't seem to affect the bird much though - which is puzzling.
